The Fountain was a work of Marcel Duchamp, first presented in 1917. The original Fountain is lost. However, there are seventeen other known versions, the latest of which was made in 1964.

[...]...It's hard for me to believe that Duchamp's first readymade is nearing its 100th anniversary-he made Bicycle Wheel in 1913. Since that time artists have taken advantage of the readymade's simple materiality and economy of means to offer pointed commentary on political, social, and esthetic issues. Given the advent of digitization, we consume images differently from even a decade ago. A selection of works in the exhibition considers the notion of images-as-readymades as well.......

[...]...Duchamp had other targets in mind when selecting a urinal as a readymade sculpture. He wanted to question the very notion of what constituted a work of art as decreed by academics and critics, whom he saw as the self-elected and largely unqualified arbiters of taste. His position was that if an artist said something was a work of art, having influenced its context and meaning, then it was a work of art, or at least demanded to be judged as such. He realised that although this was a fairly simple proposition to grasp, it would revolutionise art if accepted....
