We put the figure of Christ into the context of the divine without recognizing Christ as divine—and that is what makes him genuinely new. But the same can be said of the readymades of Duchamp. Here we are also dealing with difference beyond difference—now understood as difference between the artwork and the ordinary, profane object. Accordingly, we can say that Duchamp’s Fountain is a kind of Christ among things, and the art of the readymade a kind of Christianity of the art world.

The story of the  damage of two copies of Fountain - an art piece by Marcel Duchamp - with a hammer, by  Pierre Pinoncelli, as a statement of his, that the work had lost its provocative value. The most recent attack happened on January 4, 2006 at Centre Pompidou in Paris and the first at an exhibition in Nîmes on 25 August 1993 where he also urinated into it before using the hammer…

The Fountain was a work of Marcel Duchamp, first presented in 1917. The original Fountain is lost. However, there are seventeen other known versions, the latest of which was made in 1964.
